Shammi Kapoor is a notable Bollywood actor who starred in superhit films during the fidties and sixties. Known for his exhilarating dancing skills, Shammi Kapoor was one of the leading actors of the yesteryears. He has been honored with several awards for his extraordinary performances including the Filmfare award, Anandlok award and the prestigious Rashtriya Gaurav Award.
Shammi Kapoor was born as Shamsher Raj Kapoor on October 21, 1931 in Mumbai to the distinguished actor and filmmaker Prithviraj Kapoor. Shashi Kapoor is the brother of renowned cinema personalities Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. The influential Kapoor clan is known for other actor members like Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Rajeev Kapoor, Karishma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor.

 Shammi Kapoor was raised in Calcutta and mumbai where he became involved in theatre alongwith his father and brothers. He made his Bollywood debut in Mahesh Kaul’s 1953 release ‘Jeevan Jyoti’ opposite Chand Usmani. He was next seen in superhit films like ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ opposite Ameeta and ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ opposite Asha Parekh.


It was during this time that he met Geeta Bali, an eminent actress of the fifties. Geeta Bali had already worked with Shammi kapoor’s father and brother in a couple of films; however the two fell in love and got married at the Banganga Temples in Mumbai without the consent of their families. After getting married they informed their parents and their relationship was accepted after a little resentment. Shammi kapoor’s wife Geeta Bali died due to her illness and he remarried Neela Devi Gohil who belonged to the Royal family of Bhavnagar.
Shammi Kapoor starred in severalblockbuster films during the sixties including ‘Junglee’ opposite saira Banu, ‘Dil Tera Diwana’ opposite Mala Sinha, ‘professor’ alongside Kalpana and Lalita Pawar, ‘China Town’ alongside Shakila and Helen, ‘Rajkumar’ opposite Sadhana, ‘Teesri Manzil’ opposite Asha Parekh, ‘Kashmir ki Kali’ opposite Sharmila Tagore, ‘Bluff Master’ opposite Saira Banu and ‘Brahamchari’ alongside Rajshree and Pran. Shammi Kapoor received a Filmfare Nomination as Best Actor for ‘Professor’ and a Filmfare Best Actor Award for ‘Brahmachari’. Shammi kapoor played a pivotal role in Subhash Ghai’s ‘Vidhata’ also starring Dilip Kumar, Sanjeev Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Padmini Kolhapure. After a successful stint as the lead hero, Shammi Kapoor appeared in supporting roles in several films like ‘Prem Rog’ starring Rishi Kapoor and Padmini Kolhapure, ‘Rocky’ starring Sanjay Dutt and Reena Roy, ‘Hero’ starring Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri, ‘Prem Granth’ starring Rishi Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit, ‘Chamatakar’ starring Shahrukh Khan and Urmila Matondkar, ‘Kareeb’ starring Bobby Deol and Neha, ‘Aur Pyar Ho Gaya’ starring Aishwarya Rai and Bobby Deol, ‘Janam Samjha Karo’ starring Salman Khan and Urmila Matondkar and ‘Sandwich’ starring Govinda, Mahima Chaudhary and Raveena Tandon.
Shammi Kapoor has been honored with several lifetime achievement awards including the Filmfare award, Kalakar Award, Zee Cine award, Star Screen Award, Anandalok award, IIFA Award, Bollywood Movie Award. He has also received the Phalke Legend Actor Award and the FICCI Living Legend award.
